ABSTRACT

The potexvirus group originated in groups 4, 5, and 6 of Brandes and Wetter's classification of elongated plant viruses. Potexviruses induce complex elongated cytoplasmic inclusions of aggregated virus particles enclosing cytoplasmic components, endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, vesicles, and dictyosomes. The virus particles are aligned more or less parallel to each other in bands with narrow unstained strips separating the bands. The virus has been reported to be serologically related and unrelated to Boussingaultia mosaic, clover yellow mosaic, Narcissus mosaic, and potato aucuba mosaic potexviruses. Igwegbe described a yellow mosaic of showy crotalaria in Nigeria which he attributed to a potexvirus infection. The virus, yellow mosaic virus of C. spectabilis (YMCSV) is transmitted by Myzus persicae.
