ABSTRACT

Application of the rotating biological contractor process to industrial wastewater treatment is done in the same fashion as other biological treatment methods. One of the problems in providing biological treatment to industrial wastes is the pattern of wastewater flow from industrial operations. For many industrial waste applications, specific design criteria should be developed for accurate and economical full-scale design and regulatory agency approval. Shift operation, holidays, and weekends create the problem of operation with little or no wastewater flow. When treating a concentrated wastewater, excess biological solids will accumulate in the mixed liquor as the wastewater flows through the successive stages of treatment. Low wastewater temperatures will affect the efficiency of industrial wastewater treatment just as it does for domestic wastewater. Effluent suspended solids concentration is approximately equal to or lower than the effluent BOD concentration for refinery waste just as has been found on other types of wastes.
