ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a list of drugs that falls under two major divisions which are represented are the antiprotozoal chemotherapeutic agents and the antihistamines. Amprolium is an anticoccidial mainly used in chickens. Monensin is an antibiotic produced by Streptomyces cinnamonenis and possesses mainly anticoccidial activity, although it does have limited antifungal and antibacterial activity. Histamine is one of the earliest endogenous mediators of inflammation studied by modern pharmacology. Bromocriptine is an ergot alkaloid that is easily absorbed after oral administration and is used to suppress prolactin secretion in tumors marked by hyperprolactinemia. Tolbutamide is a sulfonylurea oral hypoglycemic drug which has widespread use in human medicine in the control of diabetes. Ciglitazone is also an experimentally active hypoglycemic agent which functions by modulating the concentration of insulin receptors. Probenecid is an encountered agent whose sole therapeutic action is to competitively inhibit the renal secretion of weak organic acids, thereby prolonging their sojourn in the body.
