The estuaries respond to these seasonal fluctuations. Because the wet weather situation is most spectacular and obvious, studies by physical oceanographers have for a long time been restricted to the fate of flood waters in shelf seas. It was shown that river floods are formed in the coastal ocean, but, because of their transient nature they are very patchy and short 1 i ~ e d .
