ABSTRACT

The most common definition of environment is "surroundings". The number one definition of negotiate is "to communicate or confer with another so as to arrive at the settlement of some matter". Environmental negotiations are the human race's most serious business. Environmental negotiation is an unusual game because if it is played very skillfully, both sides can sometimes win. In the game of environmental negotiation, there are usually clear winners and losers, but occasionally there are strategies, brilliantly conceived and carefully executed, that permit both sides to win. Environmental negotiation is a game, a most serious game, that people use to decide the quality of their air, of their water, of their soil, and of the life around them. It is the cumulative outcome of these most important games that will determine the quality of human life and the future of all life in the world.
