ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a synthesis of advances in the application of structural stormwater management practices. The concept of an "integrated approach" to planning and designing of urban stormwater quantity and quality control has been gaining global attention. The chapter presents information should be useful to engineers and planners in dealing with urban stormwater quantity and quality management. Urban stormwater runoff has been recognized as one of the major nonpoint sources of pollution, contributing to the degradation of water quality in receiving-water bodies. However, urban stormwater pollution control measures are still in the early stages of implementation and relatively few performance data are available from full-scale field applications. The concept of using stormwater detention basins to reduce runoff pollution gained widespread attention as a result of studies authorized under Section 208 of the 1972 Clean Water Act established by the United State Congress.
