Thefluorescentcompound,5(6)-carboxyfluorescein(CF),hasbeenapowerfultoolin liposomemethodologysincethepaperbyWeinsteinetal.1in1977.InthischapterIwill brieflydescribethepreparationandpropertiesofanotherwater-soluble,self-quenching fluorescentcompound,3,6-dihydroxy-2,3-his[N,N'-di(carboxymethyl)-aminomethyl]fluoran (calcein),whichcanbeusedinthesamewaysasCFandwhichhassomeadvantagesnot sharedbyCF.TheapplicationsofCFarecoveredelsewhereinthisbook,andsincethese applicationsareessentiallythesameforcalceintheywillnotberedescribed.
