Fungal sapstain does not reduce the strength of wood, but it does cause discoloration of wood, detracting from its appearance and posing a major economic problem for the wood industry. Increasing global economic and natural resource concerns necessitate the development of novel methods to recycle wood sapstain by decolorizing sapstain in wood. There are two methods for removing biological sapstain from wood; wood sapstains can be removed and hyphal growth of sapstain fungi eradicated by treating wood sapstain with (a) mixed metabolites obtained from antagonistic fungi or (b) cell-free systems.
