Nucleic acids (DNA and RNA) are composed of covalently linked nucleotides that consist of nitrogenous bases (purine and pyrimidine), a pentose (deoxyribose or ribose), and a phosphate group. The bases are attached to deoxyribose in DNA or ribose in DNA through carbon 1 of the monosaccharide. In contrast, the phosphate groups are linked to the monosaccharide at the C-51 and C-3 1 positions (Figure 8.1).
