ABSTRACT

In general, the troubleshooting process is to check each successive part of the system from the part exhibiting the problem to the part performing the ultimate disposal. If sewage does come up out of both the inlet pipe inspection port and the outlet pipe inspection port, or if the liquid level is above the top of the septic tank outlet pipe, the blockage is on the drain field side of the septic tank. Pump out the septic tank and use the stiff wire to probe through the septic tank outlet toward the drain field. If roots are the problem, treat the drain field with copper sulfate as described in the System Renovation section. If no blockage can be found, chances are that the drain field is "clogged." Another important factor is the age of the drain field. If the drain field is more than four to six years old, chances are that the soil has clogged up.
