ABSTRACT

The structured program of comprehensive, targeted, and ongoing training must be designed to cover the salient areas and must be appropriately packaged and targeted so that the required knowledge and skills are imparted to the appropriate people. Certainly, the basic technical skills to do the job must be a part of each employee's resume of knowledge. An indispensable component of any employee training program is safety. The classroom is also an appropriate forum for elucidation of legal requirements and procedures, safety training, and right-to-know education. A subset of formal operating procedures worthy of special attention is environmental procedures that are linked to regulatory requirements. Formal apprentice programs and progression systems have great utility in converting sound general knowledge backgrounds and abilities into specialized journeyman and paraprofessional skills. A significant enhancement to training programs is the use of videotapes, whether prerecorded or custom-made.
