ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the major planning steps on salt water intrusion control. The first step in monitoring ground water for the presence of salt-water intrusion is to determine the specific purpose of the monitoring program. The second step can involve taking an inventory of water users and use patterns when overpumping is involved and can also include the use of mathematical models to help understand and predict the movement of saline water under various conditions. The formulation of alternative controls can involve various approaches for sea water intrusion control or approaches for noncoastal intrusion. Water desalination is a treatment alternative that does not control intrusion but can be used to provide water supply of the desired quality. The chapter also contains a description of the legal and institutional aspects of salt water intrusion control. These aspects are basic to the selection and implementation of controls.
