ABSTRACT

The white amur has spawned naturally in certain rivers of Taiwan, Japan, and the Ukraine and has become naturalized in the River Tone in Japan. Amur prefer to feed in calm weather at dawn and dusk, but may feed during the night. They show little discrimination of food when feeding intensely. Discrimination increases as the temperature drops. At higher temperatures, the fish is a voracious feeder, and daily consumption can equal body weight. High pH value and abundant calcium and bicarbonate in solution are extremely healthy for fish growth and reproduction. The world literature on the white amur indicates that it has been widely used in Asia and Europe for food and for control of heavy growths of aquatic weeds. There is reason to believe that utilization in the US is both possible and very desirable from the standpoint of efficiency and economy.
