ABSTRACT

Serious aquatic plant infestations in India include water hyacinth and hydrilla. These and other aquatic plant infestations severely hamper agriculture that is dependent on irrigation. Several species of aquatic weeds have infested the inland waters of India including lakes, ponds, tanks, irrigation channels, and cultivated areas temporarily covered with water, such as in jute or rice culture. The Tungabhadra project is administered by the Minister of Irrigation and Power, New Delhi, India. Since ancient times the water of the Tungabhadra River has been used for irrigation. The High Level Canal Scheme was inaugurated by Shri Kadidal Manjappa, Chief Minister of Mysore, and Shri C. M. Trivedi, Governor of Andhra Pradesh, on October 2, 1956. The scheme provides for utilization of 2.8 thousand million hi water from the reservoir from June to November through the vents of the High Level Canal, to discharge a maximum of 4000 ha-cm/hr.
