ABSTRACT
11The Theory of Sampling (TOS) largely evolved since the World Conference on Sampling and Blending was created in 2003. Numerous authors brought their own definitions to many fundamental terms and notations were not always consistent. Because the right word sometimes does not exist in current sampling practice, or because various authors may disagree on the selection of such words and symbols, it is essential to write this chapter at the beginning of the book to facilitate the necessary work so kindly offered by many talented participants. Because specific notations are frequently associated with basic terms, it is natural to define them as well.
