ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how to create a simple website from scratch. Since blogdown is based on the static site generator Hugo, it needs to be installed. There is a helper function in blogdown to download and install it automatically on major operating systems by default, it installs the latest version of Hugo, but people can choose a specific version through the version argument preferred. For beginners, it is recommended that they get started with the RStudio IDE, but it is not really required. In Hugo, themes control the entire appearance and functionality of the r site. There are many differences in syntax between Blackfriday's Markdown and Pandoc's Markdown. There are a lot of ways to start building a website and deploy it. Because of the sheer number of technologies that people need to learn to fully understand how a website works, the chapter recommends one workflow to beginners.
