ABSTRACT

This chapter explores sound design in game levels and discover how sound is the final ingredient for engaging players in the constructed game worlds. An essential part of the discussions about game-pacing and architecture has been rhythm, the timed repetition of elements or movements. Rhythm is also an essential element of music and sound design. In Western musical notation, rhythm is a function of the number and type of notes found in a bar of music. The discussion of music and mood in games brings up another potential avenue for music in game levels: becoming interactive. While rhythm is the major component in how music contributes to the understanding of architecture and gamespace, there are other opportunities that sound design in games offers for enhancing game levels. The chapter explores how music and sound affect player moods and can be used to enhance emotional responses to gamespace.
