ABSTRACT

This chapter builds upon the previously developed arguments. It introduces a sensemaking perspective as a useful framework for understanding innovation. It is noted that there is relatively little work in the literature that applied a sensemaking perspective to explain innovation. The chapter seeks to explain the ways sensemaking and sensegiving processes relate to identities and embodied experiences, and how they are shaped and constrained by broader social contexts. A sensemaking theoretical framework is justified as a convincing lens through which to understand and explain how and why narratives of innovation are mobilised by practitioners. The applications of the sensemaking framework are outlined more widely and in the specific context of the built environment.
