ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the production and handling of concrete, the major types of equipment used in working with concrete, and finally cost and time estimation for concrete work. Concrete is a flexible construction material that can be used to create the structural components of many shapes or to create strong pavements that withstand surface abrasion. Concrete is produced by mixing Portland cement, water, and aggregates. Sometimes admixtures are added to the mixture to improve the workability or other properties of the concrete mix. The process of proportioning the ingredients of the concrete mix, either by weight or volume, is called batching. Structural concrete is made by constructing strong forms that shape the fluid concrete into the dimensions required to accomplish the structural task. There are a number of types of equipment that are used for handling concrete. Equipment commonly used includes wheelbarrows, buggies, chutes, conveyors, mixer trucks, buckets, and pumps.
