ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on operation analyses at the task and project level, a list of sources that can assist in performing operation analysis at the corporate level is provided on the companion website. The initial stage of operation analysis is always determining all the tasks involved in completing each site work activity. For instance, a contractor may conclude that scrapers are the most cost effective approach for cut-and-fill operations whereas trenchers are the most cost-effective approach to trenching. Project-level operation analysis also guides contractors in making equipment decisions and selecting specific items of equipment to perform each task while keeping the success of the whole project in mind. Task-level operation analysis comes before project-level analysis. Dividing the total quantity of work to be performed by the overall fleet productivity will provide an estimate of the time required to complete the operation.
