ABSTRACT

Scattering of the conduction electrons from the magnetic impurity generates an extra interaction between the electrons which can be understood using Fermi liquid theory. This chapter presents a simple model of a particle scattering from a spherically symmetric square well potential. This will acquaint undergraduates with the concept of a scattering phase shift. A scattering process is said to be elastic if the internal properties of the scattering entities remain the same upon collision and inelastic if the internal properties change upon collision. The scattering potential is centered at the origin. After the scattering process, undergraduates get, in addition to the outgoing plane wave, a spherical wave emanating from the scattering region. If the scattering is elastic, then the flux of the outgoing wave cannot differ from that of the incoming wave.
