ABSTRACT

In this chapter, many different manufacturing processes are discussed briefly. The following sections are focused on their relation to aluminum due to aluminum being the primary material for lightweighting. Many parts and subsystems in a typical automobile are manufactured using conventional and advanced manufacturing processes and technologies. Automotive companies are turning their focus from steel to aluminum mostly due to aluminum's light weight and consequent energy savings. Due to aluminum gaining attention, it is necessary to understand the different manufacturing processes in order to identify which process is the most economical.
