ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book looks at conflict and negotiation in perceiving, living-in and protecting 'home'. It also looks at the emotional attachment to home and the space around it. The book examines notions around the precarity of home. The book argues that, home is more than bricks and mortar: it is a feeling internalised, represented through emotions, memories, freedom to be authentic selves, even small objects carried with us to help us carry 'home' in heart. It also presents 'performance' in three main ways: performance as doing – a technical undertaking – a task, say, of constructing a home and identity, performance as power – discourse and control as performance of power; and performance as an art form–an act. The book discusses philosophical in nature, but it will draw from experience and research in practice to exemplify key points.
