ABSTRACT

The graphics and sound of arcade games remained superior to home consoles. Sega’s motion-controlled, hydraulic cabinets byDirector/DesignerYu Suzuki led to games likeOutRun (1986) andAfter Burner (1987), which provided a level of immersion that could not be experienced in the home. Companies like Sega and Capcom introduced refined titles to the “beat’em up” genre with games like Golden Axe and Final Fight in 1989-and a slew of other similar titles would follow. After a decline in the 1980s, the arcade industry began to enter a resurgence period after bottoming out around 1991.
