ABSTRACT

The most expansive project is the park that has been built on top of the lid that conceals the freeway as it penetrates the Mount Baker neighborhood. On the former end of the spectrum, the shafts and structures that provide ventilation for the freeway tunnel are enormous but are stepped and slightly angled back. Throughout the park, there are a number of very strange things. In one area, an elegant staircase, with well-crafted handrails can be found, while 50 feet away plain, bent-pipe handrails have been slapped into a crudely finished flight of steps. The park contains some elements that are extraordinarily beautiful. Perhaps a more dramatic tribute to Martin Luther King's ideals and dreams is found in the neighborhoods around the monument. A large complex of new neighborhood stores was built in the Genesee district. New businesses, many owned by Viet-namese families, have moved into buildings along the avenue.
