ABSTRACT

The Winslow Co-housing development has received national attention for its combination of design excellence and participatory planning. The architect worked along with the homeowners in laying out the configuration and design of units. Though the co-housing project has received much attention from the professional and popular media, there are a number of other projects which, while less well known, are also commendable. At the corner of Winslow Way and Madison Avenue is Winslow Green. The result is an intimate, village-like collection of houses, apartments, common buildings, and green space. To the south of this building is a clutch of structures that look as if they might be a different development. Despite the surveys that tell that people prefer to own a large, single-family home on a large lot, most new households can no longer afford it. The challenge is to design and build places to live that offer a blend of privacy, community, affordability, and style.
