ABSTRACT

The river twists through a tiny neighborhood in the City of Tukwila called Allentown that is filled with diminutive houses on narrow, tree-lined streets. Perched on the edge is one of the most dramatic and sophisticated community centers in the entire Puget Sound region. At almost 50,000 square feet, the Tukwila Community Center is surely one of the largest as well. It resembles a city hall or civic center. Indeed, for the people who live and work in Tukwila, the place is rapidly becoming the social center of the community. The community dates back to the turn of the century and aspects are reflected in the center. As a center of agricultural commerce, Tukwila used to be dotted with distinctively shaped barns and Victorian homes. Even though the building is one of the largest community centers in the region, its bulk has been visually reduced. The site plan also includes a community demonstration garden for growing vegetables and perennial flowers.
