ABSTRACT

Sometime in the years that followed World War II, the design of our public transportation systems—our streets and sidewalks, our buses and trains, our highways and ferryboats—were taken over by people with a very narrow per-spective. Objectives of operational efficiency, low maintenance, inexpensive materials, and austere aesthetics overshadowed every other design criteria.
