ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Gothic, low-tech tendrils that hold aloft the high-tech solar panel in the garden will inspire someone to build a big architectonic duck right in the heart of Belltown. Buildings that consume an entire block, no matter how well designed, violate the essential pattern. Belltown Court does a commendable job of producing an illusion, in part, of multiple buildings, But it's still a big box. The incredibly slender John Carney apartment building on First near Broad is a perfect example of the principle being applied to the ground. The building actually wraps around its neighbor to the south, but from the front is a diminutive, delightful addition to the street. Buildings containing the functions could be vibrant statements of civic life, contemporary landmarks, celebratory symbols. Architecturally, Seattle is a very reticent city. Almost as if people are afraid to make a social blunder that might offend someone.
