ABSTRACT

In the Pacific Northwest, a similar transformation is taking place in Everett. While much has been made of Tacoma's rebirth, the changes taking place in Everett are no less amazing. City and county buildings, along with a few interesting older structures, were adrift in a sea of vacant commercial buildings, marginal stores, and empty streets. The old downtown library, with its art deco detailing, was remodeled and expanded. Everett High School, just outside the downtown, was restored to its former classic elegance. The new Colby Square includes the Everett Community Theater. Whimsical glass pieces by Dale Chihuly adorn the lobby walls. Along Everett Avenue, the back side of the building, which would typically be blank, has windows opening into the scenery shops. Everett's downtown needs a grand public space for community events, festivals, outdoor music, and art. Downtown Everett is definitely seeing the fruits of some wise, bold decisions by both public and private leaders.
