ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 discusses outcome-based education (OBE): what it is and how it relates both to accreditation processes and the development of a program of studies. The challenges associated with OBE are also elaborated in terms of the learning environment, the learner, teacher and the required external standards. A detailed example of how accreditation criteria can be used to develop course learning outcomes (CLOs) and program learning outcomes is provided, and the importance of the relationship between the CLOs and the assessment is emphasised. Evidencing the achievement of learning outcomes is discussed through the use of the “teach, practice, measure” methodology. A sample program guide and course guide provided as concrete examples of the use of the OBE and structural design.
