The three key elements of staff renewal were succession planning, hiring and promoting, and coaching for development and performance. The purpose of a succession plan is to identify the specific talents and potential of high performers and matching them to the needs of the business. In coaching for development, the focus is on how the organization can meet the needs and aspirations of the employee. Outstanding people tend to abandon a work environment in which they believe they are not being groomed for greater responsibility through a well-planned series of key job assignments and effective coaching. One can be successful by managing "upward" with an excellent strategy and well-managed execution with little regard to staff. Success in the long run however is sustained by coaching "downward" with an increased awareness that success is achieved through talented staff that are motivated and aligned with organizational goals.
