ABSTRACT

On an individual level, most scientists and engineers start out with clear professional leadership goals. These would include working on important and impactful research projects, publishing and presenting their research, achieving recognition among their peers, and moving up the technical ladder to senior technical positions within an organization. Many assignments require only leader's personal leadership and leader will be able to assess whether he/she have sufficient attributes to succeed. If the assignment involves team leadership, leader's sphere of influence necessarily broadens to include his/her peers. Influence increases with the realization that it is not necessary to understand all of the multidisciplinary professions that go into making an organization work. Self-awareness plays an essential role in determining intrinsic motivation, building a healthy self-confidence, and increasing self-esteem. Everyone can become very good at something by working hard at acquiring a skill, but to excel usually requires tapping into one's natural talent.
