ABSTRACT

The most important first step in becoming a manager is additional self-exploration to develop a new and different mindset that will lead to new behaviors. This chapter explores the thought processes of the transition, and describes the roles and responsibilities of a science and technology. The prospect of being promoted to a managerial position is an exciting one. It is a recognition of outstanding individual performance and an expectation that a leader could potentially have a larger impact on the organization. The art of management is balancing the requirement of formal authority with the need to establish professional, trusting relationships with one's staff. The most common management style to emerge from newly appointed managers is to remain buddies with their colleagues. The management style that works best is the one that generates respect and trust from one's subordinates. The chapter concludes with an overall vision and plan of action for the transition.
