ABSTRACT

Electricity generation, transmission and distribution systems are almost exclusively alternating current systems. From 1957, the Central Electricity Generating Board was responsible for the generation and transmission of electrical energy in England and Wales, and twelve Area Boards were responsible for its distribution and marketing to the consumer. The network companies maintain and operate the electricity transmission and distribution networks. These comprise transmission network owners and distribution network owners. The suppliers purchase electrical energy, wholesale, from the generating companies, pay network and government policy costs and charges, and sell it on to the consumers. This chapter explains how the voltage induced into a conductor varies according to the angle at which the conductor moves through a magnetic field and explores Fleming's Right-Hand Rule to determine the direction of the voltage induced into a conductor moving through a magnetic field.
