ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter is to present the classification of microcontrollers, as well as the various types with each microcontroller's features. A summary comparison table for the different types of microcontrollers is presented to show the key benefits of each microcontroller, and this helps to select a particular microcontroller suitable for particular applications. Furthermore, we detail the functionality of the Future Technology Devices International (FTDI) chipset and the programmer. This leads to introducing the communication between the computer and the GPS system. This communication is accomplished via given types of cables or connectors in order to upload new programs or upgrade existing programs in the microcontroller. In addition, we develop the bootloader and its role. We define, at the end of this chapter, the other electronic equipment for GPS systems, such as the SD card, the GPS antenna, the GPS camera, and the audio kit.
