ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a regression analysis is to derive an equation relating a dependent and an explanatory variable or, more commonly, several explanatory variables. It is concerned with regression models for a response variable that is continuous and for which there is a single explanatory variable. In very general terms, regression analysis involves the development and use of statistical techniques designed to reflect the way in which variation in an observed random variable changes with changing circumstances. The scatterplot and a fit of a simple linear regression model are the first points to be considered when dealing with a set of bivariate data. Residual plots may also be helpful in indicating the possible need for higher-order terms in the explanatory variable to be included in the model.
