ABSTRACT

The first step of the research process involves selecting a research topic and writing students dissertation proposal. This chapter deals with choosing a topic for research and provides guidance on writing students dissertation proposal. There are a number of criteria that need to be considered when deciding on their research topic. These are: a dissertation topic should be realistic; their topic should be specific and narrow; accessibility of information; personal ability; and personal interest. A working title is a short line that gives students research a ‘direction’, and the title might change slightly at the final stages of research. The title should give their research an identity/name that reflects the focal point and area of the research. Ideally, between three and five single-sentence objectives should be developed. Objectives are the breakdown of student’s aim, which focuses on finding out or establishing certain issues while achieving their aim.
