ABSTRACT
This initial chapter provides a short history of automated vehicles and introduces the area of Human Factors in highly automated vehicles. This chapter outlines the taxonomy of levels of automation used throughout this book, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), as well as the objectives of the research conducted as part of this book. It also provides a chapter-by-chapter summary of the book and its overall contribution to knowledge.
