ABSTRACT
A shipping port company, handling raw material for steel plants was concerned with the repeated failures of the bend pulley in the conveyor system at the port. They were interested in determining the root cause of the failure and suggest remedial measures involved the following:
1. Perform a design audit for loads on the bend pulley 2. Determine the resonance conditions 3. Determine the material composition
In order to carry out the work, an on-site visit was undertaken. Material samples from the failed pulley were collected, the shell of the failed pulley was visually inspected after the lagging was removed, and operation of the conveyor drive system was also observed.
