ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the consequences of heat generation, volume changes, and the behavior of mass concrete while also teaching the effects of restrain, temperature controls during batching, and the placement of mass pour. The chapter does not go in-depth on the strength of concrete, but educates readers about temperature gradient that is created, which is due to the dissipation of energy at a lower rate in the core of the concrete than the temperature dissipation at the external face of concrete, which causes volumetric change while restraint causes tensile stress that lead to surface cracks.

This chapter discusses how to compute the temperature of concrete at the time of placement, how to predict the temperature rise in concrete after placement, and the types of pre-cooling and post-cooling that are to be adopted to reduce temperature differences to avoid cracking in mass concrete.
