ABSTRACT

Joints in various concrete structures are inevitable, and are present in concrete due to many reasons including work stoppages, volumetric change of concrete mass, thermal behaviors, formation of temperature gradients, and other factors. This chapter provides readers with knowledge about the provision of construction joints in suitable locations by considering maximum bending moment and minimum shear force zones, contraction joints, expansion joints, and cold joints. It suggests to readers different types of sealants to be provided in joints for structural stability, and also to describe repair processes by using epoxy. This chapter also presents a case study regarding the repair of a dynamic loading structure while establishing the health of the structure by conducting ultrasonic pulse testing methods followed by epoxy to strengthen the structure and restore the monolithic nature of structure.
