ABSTRACT
The notions of sequences and series, of numbers and of functions, are presented in this chapter, with the related concepts of pointwise and uniform convergence. The aim is mainly to minimise assumptions on the mathematical background possessed by the Reader; a purpose of notational introduction is also involved. The Basel problem is described, which will be met again in Chapters 8 and 10.
