ABSTRACT

Grand buildings in historic cities like Rome, London and Venice were constructed under the private initiatives of ecclesiastical, royal, municipal or rich mercantile patronage. Taking design life, economic and environmental considerations into account, there is not a universal set of standards for corrosion control but a menu of options from which to select to suit particular projects. Stray current corrosion is an issue of some concern for concrete structures in close proximity to electric railroads and streetcars. Modern construction relies on the application of metals. Some uses are overt, such as external cladding and siding, roofing, plumbing and central heating installations, but the most vital roles are concealed in their application as load-bearing members in steel reinforced concrete and in steel framing for high-rise structures. Stainless steels are applied extensively in swimming pool buildings, both for structural members and for accessories like balustrades and ladders.
