ABSTRACT

Corrosion control is a primary requirement in the oil industry. Oil breaches are a problem to the environment and a hazard to health. In the oil industry, like many other industrial sectors, there is a body of in-house terminology to describe items such as the different sectors of the industry, the chemical makeup of types of oil sources and production and maintenance equipment. The common corrosion problem encountered in upstream environments is carbon dioxide corrosion. The chemical agent in oilfield chemistry which can have a major impact on corrosion control in the oil industry is hydrogen sulfide. In marine oil exploitation the ubiquitous presence of seawater environments is a primary consideration. A feature of oilfield corrosion is that it can be accentuated by microbial corrosion. Many of the principles of cathodic protection outlined are applicable to oilfield corrosion. Corrosion under insulation is a potential problem in the oil industry as it is throughout processing planta in a number of industries.
