ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews some of the most important theoretical foundation of GFIEMs and the scattering problems of interest. Maxwell’s equations are reviewed in Sec. 2.1 along with the electromagnetics boundary conditions, wave equations, and the Poynting vector. The planar layered reference structures of interest in the book require knowledge of Fresnel reflection and transmission, and of waveguide modes, which are reviewed in Sec. 2.2. Finally, the optical cross sections that are of interest in many scattering calculations are derived and explained in detail in Sec. 2.3.
