ABSTRACT

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is most commonly spread through sexual intercourse or intravenous drug use. All three of the communicable diseases, malaria, (HIV/AIDS) and tuberculosis, are preventable and all have effective treatments available. This chapter discusses prevention and treatments of these three communicable diseases. Most of the funding in low and middle-income countries went to establishing a clinic based system for HIV treatment, regardless of the health status of patients. The use of antiretroviral (ARV) medication by HIV-negative people in a high exposure risk situation has also been shown to prevent contraction of HIV. The use of ARV medication by pregnant and lactating women has been shown to prevent spread of infection to babies. Most of the funding in low and middle-income countries went to establishing a clinic based system for HIV treatment, regardless of the health status of patients.
