ABSTRACT

Torment is quite ambitious in both scope and goals, a fact that ironically might not be readily apparent to a player due to those selfsame goals. Torment might possibly require the most playthroughs of any computer role-playing games (CRPG) to experience everything it has to offer. While some welcomed a CRPG with deep, rich, and nuanced storytelling, others dismissed it as a “novel” that they didn't want to take the time to read. More than anything, Age of Decadence comes across as a commentary on Late Modern CRPGs, especially those that focus solely on action and power fantasy fulfillment. Gameplay and user interface-wise, it's hard not to think of BioWare's isometric, party-based Infinity engine while playing Pathfinder: Kingmaker, albeit with modern updates and UI innovations on Owlcat's part. In 2015, an American indie developer named Toby Fox published a game he built with GameMaker Studio, a humble do-it-yourself 2D game engine designed for novices.
