ABSTRACT

Silver Age Computer role-playing games (CRPGs) had broader appeal and greater ambitions, and they won over computer types who'd never cracked open a Player's Handbook. The Silver Age also saw several other important and influential games, such as Telengard, Sword of Fargoal, Dungeons of Daggorath, Tunnels of Doom, and Universe. The game handles hit points in a similar way to Akalabeth: instead of regenerating by resting or healing, the character must either buy hit points from the king or receive them upon leaving a dungeon. In any case, Ultima: Escape from Mt. Drash was a poor seller and is so rare today that it has become a Holy Grail for collectors of vintage software. Ultima III was a smash hit, selling some 120,000 copies and cementing Lord British's reputation as the foremost maker of CRPGs.
