ABSTRACT

The World Wide Web (WWW) is one of the major forces behind the development of XML. Therefore, it is reasonable to start this book with a discussion of the evolution of the Web and the origins of XML.

The developments of the Internet have been key to the development of the WWW. The Internet started as a research project funded by the U.S. Department of Defense. Much of the work was conducted in the 1970s. At that time, numerous developments with networking occurred. We began to see various networking protocols and products emerge. In addition, standards groups such as International Standards Organzation (ISO) proposed a layered stack of protocols for networking. The Internet research resulted in Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) for transport communication.
